Elantxobe

Elantxobe is a small coastal town located in the province of Bizkaia, inside Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and just below cape Ogoño, the tallest sea cliffs in the Basque Country. Founded in the 16th century, the town developed around its fishing port, which became the heart of its economy and community life. Fishing remains an integral part of Elantxobe’s identity, with its port still active and central to the town’s character.

The town’s architecture reflects its steep topography, with narrow, winding streets and houses built on terraced slopes descending toward the harbor. Historically, these houses were homes to fishermen and their families, emphasizing the town’s maritime heritage.

One of the main attractions is the port itself, which offers views of the rugged coastline and serves as a starting point for boat tours and fishing excursions. The town square, located near the port, serves as a gathering place and often hosts traditional events and markets.

Some interesting experiences in Elantxobe are:

  • Watch arriving local buses turnaroud. The street is so narrow that there is no space for an arriving bus to turn, so an automatic bus turntable is used by the local buses.
  • Walk to the “Mirador” and enjoy the views over the harbor.
  • Take a dip in the natural swiming pool, located in the port.
  • Go for a walk and climb the Ogoño cape
