Mendozar tower

The Torre de Mendoza, located in the village of Mendoza in Araba, is a remarkable example of medieval defensive architecture in the Basque Country. Built in the late 13th or early 14th century, this tower was a stronghold for the influential Mendoza family, whose power and influence were integral to the region’s history.

Constructed during a time of frequent territorial conflicts, the Torre de Mendoza served as both a residence and a fortress. It played a key role in defending the area and symbolized the Mendoza familyā€™s prominence. Over the centuries, the tower underwent renovations, adapting to changing architectural styles while preserving its defensive features.

The structure is a classic medieval tower, rectangular in shape and built from locally quarried stone. It features thick walls, crenellations, and arrow slits, designed for defense against invaders. The interior is divided into multiple floors, each serving distinct purposes, such as storage, living quarters, and defensive operations.

Today, the Torre de Mendoza it’s usually closed to visitors, but sometimes it houses temporary exhibits that allow visiting it’s five floors and learning about the history of the tower and the Mendoza lineage. The surroundings are always visitable and accesible to anyone who wishes to admire this amazing medieval fortification.
