Leioa Agricultural and Livestock Fair

When & Where: First or second Sunday of December, from 9:00 to 15:00 in Errekalde square.

The Leioako Nekazaritza eta Abeltzaintza Azoka or Feria Agrícola y Ganadera de Leioa is an annual agricultural fair that celebrates the region’s rural heritage, agricultural traditions, and local produce. Held in the town of Leioa, located in Biscay, this event serves as a vital link between the agricultural community and urban residents, fostering appreciation for the rich bounty of the Basque countryside.

At the heart of the fair is the market, which showcases a wide range of local and regional products. Farmers and producers bring their best offerings, including fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, honey, bread, and traditional baked goods. Basque specialties like txakoli wine and cider are also available, giving visitors a taste of the region’s culinary identity. Artisan crafts, such as handmade textiles, ceramics, and wooden items, add variety to the market’s offerings.

The fair features livestock exhibitions, a key attraction for families and agricultural enthusiasts. Visitors can observe local breeds of sheep, cattle, horses, and poultry, underscoring the region’s agricultural diversity. Demonstrations of traditional farming techniques, such as plowing with oxen, provide a glimpse into the practices that have shaped Basque rural life for centuries.

In addition to the market and livestock displays, the fair includes cultural events and entertainment. Traditional Basque music and dance performances, including trikitixa (accordion music) and bertsolaritza (improvised poetry), create a lively atmosphere. Workshops and activities for children, such as crafts and pony rides, ensure the event appeals to all age groups.
