Chapel of San Martín de Tidón

The chapel of San Martín, located near the town of Viana in Navarre, is a historic chapel likely constructed in the 12th or 13th century. This modest yet significant structure is situated amidst scenic landscapes, offering a serene and contemplative environment for visitors.

This small Romanesque church, built entirely of carved stone, consists of two rectangular sections constructed at different times. The first section, the original Romanesque part, dates to the 12th century, with a consecration inscription from 1134. It features a flat-headed apse with a semicircular window framed by columns and decorative carvings.

The second section, built later, is a nave with a simple wooden roof and a Gothic-style southern doorway. This doorway has pointed arches with column capitals carved in stylized vegetation motifs. Lighting is provided by two narrow semicircular windows on the southern wall.

Inside, the chapel maintains its simple character with a simple nave covered by a wooden or vaulted ceiling, depending on the restoration phases. The absence of elaborate decoration allows visitors to appreciate the purity of its design, which aligns with the spiritual values of humility and devotion.

Surrounded by natural beauty, the chapel’s location adds to its appeal. It is often visited during local festivities or as part of walking routes that highlight the cultural and natural treasures of the area. The proximity of Viana, a historic town on the Camino de Santiago, makes the Ermita de San Martín an attractive stop for pilgrims and tourists alike.
