Tower of Urkulu

The Urkulu Tower, or Urkulu Dorrea, is a Roman-era construction located on the summit of mount Urkulu in the Navarrese Pyrenees, near the border with France. This ancient tower, which dates back to the 1st century BCE, was built during the Roman conquest of the region, under the rule of Emperor Augustus. It is believed to have served as a commemorative monument marking the Roman Empire’s dominance over the area and the completion of their control of the Pyrenees.

Constructed with large, well-fitted stone blocks, the tower stands as a symbol of Roman engineering and their ability to adapt to challenging terrains. While its original height is uncertain due to the damage sustained over the centuries, its circular base and remaining sections indicate a robust design. The structure’s strategic location on the mountain summit suggests it may also have served as a landmark for travelers and soldiers moving through the Pyrenean passes.

The Urkulu Tower held great symbolic significance for the Romans. It likely commemorated their victory over local tribes and their successful expansion into the Iberian Peninsula. Its location at a height of over 1.400 meters above sea level underscores its function as a monument of triumph and a visible marker of Roman presence in the region.

Today, the ruins of the Urkulu Tower are an important historical and archaeological site, attracting visitors interested in the Roman legacy in Navarre. The site is also a popular destination for hikers, offering a rewarding trek through the scenic landscapes of the Pyrenees and breathtaking views from the summit.
