Mendukilo Caves

The Mendukilo Caves are a natural cave system located in the Sierra de Aralar, within the municipality of Astitz, Navarre. Once used as a refuge for shepherds, these caves have been adapted for tourism, offering a unique opportunity to explore the underground world of the region.

Formed over thousands of years by the erosive action of water on limestone, the caves showcase impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleological formations. Visitors can follow a guided route along an elevated walkway, allowing safe access to different chambers while preserving the fragile environment. Among the most remarkable areas is the “Sala del Lago” (Lake Hall), where a small underground lake reflects the rock formations, and the “Sala de la Morada”, known for its large columns and high ceilings.

The caves maintain a constant temperature of around 8°C, creating an environment suitable for various underground species, including bats and invertebrates. Artificial lighting has been strategically placed to highlight the geological features without disturbing the ecosystem.

The Cuevas de Mendukilo are part of the Aralar Natural Park, an area known for its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes. With its combination of geological wonders and accessible infrastructure, Mendukilo stands out as one of the most important cave tourism sites in Navarre.
