Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz

The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz is one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in the Basque Country. Located in Argandoña, about 8 kilometers from Vitoria-Gasteiz, it stands on a hill surrounded by the “Llanada Alavesa”.

The sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Estíbaliz, the patron saint of Álava, dates back to the 11th century and is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture. Its most remarkable feature is the southern portal, adorned with elaborate sculptural decorations, including archivolts with geometric and vegetal motifs, as well as human and animal figures. The facade and apse also showcase finely crafted stonework characteristic of medieval religious art.

Inside, the sanctuary has a single nave with a semicircular apse, creating a space of great solemnity. The statue of Our Lady of Estíbaliz, a Romanesque carving, is the centerpiece of devotion.

Throughout history, the sanctuary has undergone various restorations, preserving its original essence while adapting to the needs of different periods. Today, it remains a place of worship and cultural interest, attracting visitors for its architectural beauty, religious importance, and tranquil surroundings. The sanctuary is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago del Interior, reinforcing its historical connection to pilgrimage routes.

Adjacent to the sanctuary, the Interpretation Center of the Romanesque in Álava is a cultural space dedicated to showcasing the rich Romanesque heritage of Araba. It serves as an entry point for understanding the numerous Romanesque churches and monuments scattered throughout the province, featuring audiovisual presentations, detailed models, and informational panels that explain the architectural and artistic characteristics of the Romanesque style.

A visit to the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz and the Interpretation Center of the Romanesque in Álava offers an opportunity to explore the medieval heritage of Álava, appreciate Romanesque art, and experience a site of deep historical and spiritual significance.
