Ekain cave and Ekainberri replica

Ekain Cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located near Zestoa, in Gipuzkoa. It is renowned for its exceptional Paleolithic cave art, dating back approximately 14,000 years. The cave’s walls are adorned with over 70 depictions of animals, including horses, bison, and deer, painted and engraved with remarkable skill and realism.

These paintings are considered some of the finest examples of Upper Paleolithic art in Europe. Among the various sets of cave paintings housed in Ekain, the one known as the “Panel of Horses” stands out.

To preserve the fragile original cave, the Ekainberri Replica was created nearby, offering visitors an authentic experience without compromising the integrity of the original site. Opened in 2008, Ekainberri meticulously replicates the cave’s environment, artworks, and atmosphere, allowing guests to admire the prehistoric art and learn about the techniques and tools used by its creators.

The visit to Ekainberri starts in the visitor center, located in the center of Zestoa. From there, you must walk around 20 minutes to reach the cove.
