Dolmen of Sorginaren Txabola

The Chabola de la Hechicera, or “The Witch’s Hut,” is one of the most well-preserved and significant dolmens in the Basque Country. Located near the town of Elvillar in Araba, this megalithic structure dates back to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago.

The dolmen consists of a large burial chamber formed by vertically positioned stone slabs and an entrance corridor. Originally covered by a tumulus, it served as a collective burial site for prehistoric communities. Its intriguing name likely originates from local folklore, which often attributes mystical connotations to ancient monuments.

Discovered in 1935, the Chabola de la Hechicera has been extensively studied and is a key part of the region’s archaeological heritage. Excavations have revealed human remains and burial artifacts, providing insights into the rituals and customs of its builders.

The dolmen is easily accessible via a short walk from Elvillar, with clear signage guiding visitors to the site. Nestled amidst the rolling vineyards of the renowned Rioja Alavesa wine region, the site offers visitors a unique blend of history and natural beauty.
