Dolmen of San Martín

The Dolmen of San Martín, located in the municipality of Laguardia, Álava, is among the most notable prehistoric monuments in the Basque Country. It is considered one of the oldest constructions found in the world, as it dates back to 3.500 BCE.

This dolmen is a corridor-type tomb, featuring a burial chamber accessed through a passageway, both covered with flat stone slabs. The entire structure was originally surrounded by a circular tumulus of earth and stones, which has suffered damage due to agricultural activities in the area. Archaeological excavations have uncovered human remains, as well as funerary offerings such as ceramic fragments, flint tools, and other artifacts that provide insight into the burial practices of the period.

The Dolmen de San Martín is part of the rich megalithic heritage of the Rioja Alavesa region, which includes other notable dolmens such as La Chabola de la Hechicera and El Alto de la Huesera. These monuments offer valuable insights into the burial practices and social structures of the prehistoric communities that inhabited the region.

Today, the site is easily accessible and offers an opportunity to explore the area’s ancient past in a scenic setting surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. Informational panels provide context for visitors, explaining the dolmen’s construction, function, and archaeological findings.
