Mina Lucia

The Mina LucĂa, located near Atauri in Álava, offers a glimpse into the region’s mining past, specifically the extraction of bituminous rock, also known as asphaltite. This geological formation, rich in hydrocarbons, has been exploited in the area for various purposes, including road construction and waterproofing.

The mining activity in the area dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by the increasing demand for asphalt in infrastructure development. Mina LucĂa was one of the key extraction sites. The bituminous rock was formed millions of years ago from the accumulation of organic matter, primarily algae and plankton, in ancient marine environments. Over time, these organic remains were buried under layers of sediment and subjected to heat and pressure, transforming them into hydrocarbon-rich deposits. These deposits are often found within sedimentary rock formations, such as limestone and marl.

The extraction process at Mina LucĂa involved open-pit mining techniques, where the bituminous rock was quarried from the surface. The extracted material was then processed to separate the asphalt from the surrounding rock. The asphalt was then used for road paving, waterproofing buildings, and other industrial applications.

After being closed for nearly a century, Mina LucĂa has been restored as a tourist attraction and reopened to the public in 2023. Visits are conducted through guided tours, which is essential for safety and to get the most out of the experience. The tours provide information about the mine’s history, the extraction process, and the geological formation of the bituminous rock. A key part of the visit is entering a 300-meter underground gallery, allowing visitors to experience the conditions of the mine firsthand.
