Señorio de Bertiz

The Señorío de Bertiz Natural Park, located in the Baztan Valley of Navarre, is a protected area encompassing a diverse ecosystem of forests, rivers, and meadows. This former private estate, now a public park, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and rich history of the region.

The history of Bertiz dates back to the medieval period, when it was established as a seigneury (señorío), a feudal estate granted by the king. The Bertiz family held ownership of the estate for centuries, shaping its landscape and managing its resources. In 1949, the last lord of Bertiz, Pedro Ciga Mayor, bequeathed the estate to the Navarrese government, stipulating its preservation as a natural park for public use.

The park is characterized by its lush Atlantic forests, dominated by beech, oak, and chestnut trees. The Bidassoa River and its tributaries flow through the park, creating diverse habitats for a variety of flora and fauna. The park also features a botanical garden showcasing a collection of native and exotic plant species.

Visiting the Señorío de Bertiz is generally straightforward. The park has a visitor center that provides information about the park’s history, flora, and fauna, as well as maps and trail guides. Access to the park is generally free, although there may be fees for specific activities or guided tours.
