Urdaibai Bird Center

Urdaibai Bird Center and Surrounding Birdwatching Spots

The Urdaibai Bird Center is a research and visitor facility located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in Biscay, Basque Country. Dedicated to ornithology and environmental education, it serves as an observation point and a hub for studying migratory birds. The center is situated in one of the most important wetlands in northern Spain, a crucial stopover for birds traveling between Europe and Africa.

Established in 2012, the center is housed in a restored traditional farmhouse overlooking the Orueta marshes. It offers exhibitions, interactive displays, and guided tours to help visitors understand the biodiversity of the region. The facility also features an observation deck equipped with telescopes for birdwatching. Key species observed in the area include herons, egrets, spoonbills, and various raptors, depending on the season.

The center is accessible by car from Bilbao in approximately 40 minutes. From Gernika, follow the BI-2235 road towards Gautegiz Arteaga, where clear signs direct visitors to the center. Free parking is available on-site. For those using public transport, Gernika is well-connected by bus and train, and the center is a short taxi ride from the town.

The best times to visit are during the spring and autumn migration seasons, when the highest diversity of birds can be observed. However, the center is open year-round, and each season offers unique wildlife experiences. Early mornings are recommended for optimal birdwatching conditions.

In addition to the center, nearby birdwatching spots such as the Orueta marshes, Kanala estuary, and the Sandbanks of Laida provide opportunities to explore the reserve’s rich avian life. Visitors are encouraged to use designated observation points and follow conservation guidelines to protect this internationally recognized natural habitat.
