Hondarribia

Hondarribia, historically known as Fuenterrabia, is a coastal town located at the mouth of the Bidasoa River in Gipuzkoa, marking the border with France. Its strategic location has played a significant role in its history.

Originally a small fishing village, Hondarribia’s strategic importance grew during the Middle Ages. Its fortified walls and castle made it a key defensive point, leading to numerous sieges and battles throughout history. The town was officially founded in the 13th century, receiving its town charter in 1203.

Hondarribia boasts several notable attractions:

  • The Old Town (Alde Zaharra): Enclosed by medieval walls, the Old Town features narrow cobblestone streets, traditional Basque houses with colorful wooden balconies, and historical buildings.
  • The Castle of Charles V: This imposing fortress, dating back to the 10th century and later expanded by Emperor Charles V, overlooks the town and offers panoramic views.
  • Santa María Gate: This impressive gate serves as the main entrance to the Old Town and is a remnant of the town’s fortifications.
  • The Marina: This vibrant area is home to the fishing port and a variety of restaurants and bars, offering fresh seafood and local cuisine.

Today, Hondarribia is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and picturesque coastal setting.
