Irati Forest

The Irati Forest, found in the western Pyrenees, covers 17.300 ha on the Soule, Basse-Navarre (France) and Navarre (Spain) provinces, framed by Mount Okabe (1,466 m) and Pic d’Orhy (2,017 m). It is amongst the largest and best preserved mixed beech-fir forest in Europe.

This extensive woodland is a haven of biodiversity and a vital natural ecosystem. Its dense vegetation, meandering rivers, and serene landscapes offer an extraordinary experience for nature lovers and serve as an example of ecological harmony.

Historically, the Selva de Irati has been intricately connected to human activity, primarily through sustainable forestry practices. For centuries, local communities relied on the forest for timber, firewood, and grazing. Strict management ensured the preservation of this unique environment, setting a precedent for balanced coexistence between humans and nature. The forest also holds cultural significance, with ancient myths and traditions deeply rooted in the Basque mithology.

Ecologically, the Selva de Irati is a treasure trove of biodiversity. The beech and fir trees form a lush canopy that shelters numerous species of flora and fauna. Wildlife such as deer, wild boar, and foxes inhabit the forest, while its rivers and streams support amphibians and fish. The area is also a critical habitat for birds, including the endangered capercaillie and various raptors, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Seasonal changes transform the forest, offering breathtaking displays of color and light. Spring and summer bring vibrant greenery and blooming wildflowers, while autumn paints the landscape with fiery reds and golds. In winter, the snow-covered trees create a serene and almost magical atmosphere.

Today, the Selva de Irati is a protected area, attracting visitors from around the world. Well-maintained trails and designated viewpoints allow for exploration without compromising its ecological integrity. It remains a symbol of sustainable environmental stewardship and an enduring link between humanity and nature, offering a tranquil escape into one of Europe’s most remarkable forests.
