Otzarreta forest

Otzarreta Forest is a unique and picturesque beech forest located within the Gorbeia Natural Park, on the border between Bizkaia and Araba. Known for its characteristic twisted tree trunks and ethereal atmosphere, the forest is a prime example of the region’s natural beauty. Otzarreta’s beech trees, with their unusual upward-growing branches, are remnants of a historical practice of pollarding. This traditional method involved cutting tree branches for firewood and livestock fodder, shaping the forest’s distinctive appearance over time.

The forest is easily accessible by road. Visitors can reach Otzarreta from Bilbao in approximately 45 minutes by car. From the village of Areatza, follow the signs to the Gorbeia Natural Park and continue towards the Saldropo Wetland area, which serves as a starting point for exploring Otzarreta. Ample parking is available nearby. The forest is also connected to a network of marked hiking trails, making it accessible to walkers and nature enthusiasts.

Otzarreta Forest is best visited during autumn, when the vibrant colors of the falling leaves enhance its unique appearance. However, it remains accessible and enjoyable year-round. Winter offers a serene, frosty landscape, while spring and summer bring lush greenery. Early mornings or weekdays are recommended to avoid crowds and fully experience the tranquility of the area.

While Otzarreta Forest is relatively small in size, it holds significant ecological and cultural value within the Gorbeia Natural Park. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by staying on designated paths and following local guidelines to preserve its delicate ecosystem.
