House of Assemblies and the Tree of Gernika

The Casa de Juntas de Gernika is a historic and symbolic site located in the town of Gernika. It has served as a central place for the political and cultural identity of Bizkaia and the Basque Country for centuries.

The oak tree, or Gernikako arbola, stands as a powerful symbol of Basque freedom and tradition. The tree visible today is a descendant of the original sacred oak, which withstood centuries as the witness of historic assemblies.

The origins of the Casa de Juntas date back to medieval times, when representatives of the towns and villages of Bizkaia gathered under a sacred oak tree to discuss laws and matters of governance. This assembly tradition played a key role in the development of the Basque system of self-governance.

The current building, constructed in a Neoclassical style, was completed in 1833 to house the General Assemblies of Bizkaia. Today, it remains the meeting place for the Juntas Generales de Bizkaia, the province’s legislative body.

The Casa de Juntas de Gernika is deeply linked to Basque identity and resilience, particularly after the tragic bombing of Gernika in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. It remains a key symbol of democracy and Basque autonomy.
