Church of San Pedro de la Rúa

The Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, located in Estella-Lizarra, is one of the town’s most emblematic landmarks and a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Ega River, this church has been a spiritual and historical focal point since its construction in the 12th century. Its location along the Camino de Santiago underscores its significance as a key stop for medieval pilgrims.

The church’s Romanesque origins are evident in its robust and harmonious design. The façade features a simple yet elegant portal, with semicircular arches and minimal decoration characteristic of the style. The most striking feature of San Pedro de la Rúa is its cloister, renowned for its artistic and architectural beauty. Although partially damaged by Castilian troops during the Conquest of Navarre, the cloister remains a highlight, with intricately carved capitals depicting biblical scenes, floral motifs, and mythical creatures. These carvings reflect the skill and imagination of the medieval stonemasons who crafted them.

The interior of the church is equally impressive, with a single nave and a vaulted ceiling that create a sense of solemnity and grandeur. The high altar, adorned with intricate carvings, is a focal point, and the church’s overall simplicity enhances the spiritual atmosphere.
