Balmaseda Medieval Market

When & Where: Second weekend of May, in Balmaseda’s old town center.

The Balmasedako Erdi Aroko Azoka or Mercado Medieval de Balmaseda, held annually in the Biscayan town of Balmaseda, is a vibrant celebration that transports visitors back to the Middle Ages. Taking place in the heart of the historic town, this event highlights Balmaseda’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance as an important medieval settlement and trade hub.

The old town of Balmaseda is transformed into a bustling medieval marketplace, with stalls lining its cobbled streets offering a variety of artisanal products, local crafts, and traditional Basque delicacies. Vendors dressed in period costumes sell items such as handmade jewelry, pottery, and textiles, alongside food products like cheeses, honey, and baked goods, adding an authentic medieval flair to the experience.

The event features live performances and reenactments that bring medieval history to life. Sword fights, knightly duels, and theatrical performances narrating local legends and historical events are performed by skilled actors and reenactors. Traditional Basque music and dance also play an essential role in the festivities, creating a lively and immersive atmosphere.

Workshops and demonstrations are an integral part of the Fiesta Medieval. Blacksmiths, weavers, and other craftsmen showcase traditional techniques, allowing visitors to gain insight into medieval craftsmanship. For younger attendees, there are games, storytelling sessions, and interactive activities designed to educate and entertain.

One of the highlights of the festival is the parade, where participants dressed as knights, peasants, merchants, and nobles march through the streets, recreating the town’s medieval past. The event is complemented by communal feasts featuring Basque and medieval-inspired dishes, often served in settings designed to evoke the ambiance of a medieval banquet.
