Three Wise Men Festivities

When & Where: On February 5, in most of the towns of the Basque Country and Navarre in Spain.

The Errege Magoak or Reyes Magos festivities, celebrated annually on January 5th and 6th, hold a significant place in the cultural and religious traditions of the Basque Country. Rooted in Christian customs, these celebrations honor the biblical journey of the Magi who brought gifts to the newborn Christ, symbolizing the culmination of the Christmas season.

The Cabalgata de Reyes (Three Kings Parade) is the highlight of the festivities. On the evening of January 5th, towns and cities across the Basque Country organize processions featuring elaborately decorated floats, costumed participants, and live performances. The Three Kings—Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar—are the central figures of the parade, riding through the streets while distributing candy to the crowds. The parades are vibrant, family-oriented events, accompanied by music, lights, and performances that captivate children and adults alike.

In addition to the parades, January 6th is marked by family gatherings and the exchange of gifts, reflecting the Magi’s act of offering treasures to the Christ child. This day is also associated with the traditional Roscón de Reyes, a round, sweet brioche-like cake adorned with candied fruits, symbolizing the jewels of the Kings’ crowns. Hidden inside the cake are small surprises, often a figurine of a king and a dried bean. The person who finds the figurine is declared “king” for the day, while the one who finds the bean traditionally takes on the responsibility of buying the Roscón the following year.

The Reyes Magos festivities are deeply rooted in history and are celebrated throughout the Basque Country. While the traditions are shared across Spain, local variations often include elements of Basque culture, such as performances in Euskera or regional music. The celebrations offer visitors a unique opportunity to witness a blend of religious devotion, cultural heritage, and joyful communal spirit, making it a memorable experience for all who attend.
