Butr贸n Castle (Gaztelu Butroin) is a medieval fortress located in Gatika, Bizkaia. Its origins date back to the 13th century when it was constructed as a defensive tower by the Butr贸n family, a noble lineage involved in territorial disputes during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, it played a central role in regional power struggles, particularly during the Banderizos Wars鈥攃onflicts between rival noble families in the Basque Country.
The castle underwent significant transformations in the 19th century under the ownership of Francisco de Cubas, also known as the Marquis of Cubas. Inspired by Central European castles, he redesigned the structure in a neo-Gothic style, giving it the romanticized appearance it has today. This renovation emphasized aesthetic appeal over defensive functionality, resulting in a unique blend of medieval architecture and 19th-century romanticism.
Surrounded by dense forests, the castle features imposing towers, crenelated walls, and intricate details that highlight its architectural significance. Although it is not currently open for public tours, its exterior remains a popular destination for visitors and photographers. The surrounding parkland enhances the castle鈥檚 picturesque setting, making it an ideal location for outdoor exploration.
