Fine Arts Museum of Araba

The Fine Arts Museum of Araba, located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, is one of the most important art museums in the Basque Country. Housed in the Palacio de Augustin-Zulueta, an early 20th-century mansion with a blend of historicist and modernist architectural elements, the museum provides a unique setting for its collection. The building itself, with its elegant façade, intricate interior details, and surrounding gardens, is an attraction in its own right.

The museum was founded in 1942 with the aim of preserving and showcasing the artistic heritage of Álava and the wider Basque region. Its collection spans from the 14th century to the 20th century, featuring works from both local and international artists. A significant part of the collection is dedicated to Basque art, with pieces from prominent painters such as Ignacio Zuloaga, Aurelio Arteta, and Ramón de Zubiaurre. It also includes works from the Spanish Golden Age, with paintings by Ribera, Zurbarán, and Madrazo, as well as 19th- and 20th-century Spanish masters.

In addition to paintings, the museum houses sculptures, decorative arts, and historical artifacts, offering a broad perspective on artistic evolution in the region. The collection continues to expand through acquisitions and donations, reinforcing its role as a cultural reference point.

Its central location in Vitoria-Gasteiz, along with its diverse and well-preserved collection, makes it a must-visit for those interested in art and history in the Basque Country.
