The Eibarko Armagintzaren Museoa (Eibar Arms Industry Museum) is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich industrial heritage and historical memory of Eibar, a town renowned for its longstanding tradition in arms manufacturing.
Situated in the town center, the museum is housed in a former weapons factory, in the headquarters of the important Aguirre y Aranzabal shotgun factory, AYA, and is a characteristic example of the industrial architecture that developed in Eibar in the 20th century.
The museum’s primary objective is to offer visitors a comprehensive journey through the evolution of Eibar’s industry and technology, spanning from the 14th century to the present day. This chronological exploration provides insight into the advancements and transformations that have defined the town’s industrial landscape over the centuries.
Among its extensive collection, the museum boasts approximately 1.000 weapons, including both short and long firearms, as well as bladed weapons. While the majority of these pieces date back to the 19th and 20th centuries, the collection also features a notable firearm from the 16th century, highlighting the enduring legacy of arms production in the region.
In addition to weaponry, the museum showcases a diverse array of products manufactured in Eibar, such as bicycles, motorcycles, and sewing machines, illustrating the town’s versatile industrial output. The exhibition space spans over 1.000 square meters, occupying the entire fifth floor of the building, and offers visitors a thorough understanding of Eibar’s industrial memory and heritage.
The Eibarko Armagintzaren Museoa serves as a tribute to the artisans and workers whose craftsmanship and innovation have significantly contributed to the Basque Country’s industrial development. It stands as a testament to Eibar’s identity as a “city of workshops,” where residential and industrial spaces coexist, creating a unique environment that blends family life with the sounds and scents of machinery.
