Church of Santa Maria in Deba

The Church of Santa María in Deba is one of the most notable examples of Gothic architecture in the Basque Country. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, this religious monument stands out for its impressive façade, sculptural decoration, and cloister, making it a key cultural and historical landmark in the town.

The church follows the Gothic style, with Renaissance and Baroque elements incorporated in later periods. Its main façade, considered one of the finest in Gipuzkoa, features a large pointed arch portal with elaborate sculptural reliefs depicting biblical scenes, saints, and intricate decorative motifs. This façade is a remarkable example of the Basque Flamboyant Gothic style.

Inside, the church has a single nave with side chapels and a high ribbed vault. The altarpiece, a later addition, is an example of Baroque religious art, richly decorated with sculptures and gilded elements. Another significant feature is the cloister, a unique element for a parish church, with finely carved arches that showcase a blend of Gothic and Renaissance influences.

Due to its architectural and artistic importance, the Church of Santa María was declared a Cultural Heritage Site. It also holds relevance for the Camino de Santiago, as Deba is a stop along the Northern Route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims and visitors alike admire the church for its historical depth and artistic beauty.

The church is open to the public and offers guided visits, allowing tourists to explore its architectural details and history.
