The Basilica of San Prudencio de Armentia, located near Vitoria-Gasteiz, is one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Araba. It is dedicated to San Prudencio, the patron saint of the province, and has been a major pilgrimage site for centuries.
The origins of the basilica date back to the 12th century, during a period of flourishing Romanesque art in the Iberian Peninsula. Built on the site of an earlier church, it became a prominent center of worship and pilgrimage, particularly after the canonization of San Prudencio, a 6th-century bishop who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity in Ălava.
The Romanesque style of the basilica is evident in its semi-circular apse, thick stone walls, and rounded arches. The façade preserves sculptural details characteristic of the period, including decorative elements and reliefs with religious motifs. Inside, the church has a single nave covered with a barrel vault, and the main altar houses an image of San Prudencio.
The interior of the basilica is equally captivating, with a Latin cross layout and a semicircular apse that houses the main altar. The thick columns and barrel-vaulted ceilings create an atmosphere of solemnity and devotion. The apse features remnants of medieval frescoes, adding to the basilicaâs historical and artistic value.
In the 18th century, the basilica underwent significant Baroque-style renovations, which included the addition of a bell tower and other decorative elements. These modifications harmoniously blend with the original Romanesque structure, creating a unique fusion of styles.
The surroundings of the basilica include Armentia Park, an ideal setting for walking and enjoying nature. Every April 28th, the Fiesta de San Prudencio is celebrated, attracting visitors and locals who gather for religious ceremonies and traditional festivities.
