Albaola Museum, officially known as the Albaola Basque Maritime Factory, is a unique cultural and historical center located in Pasai San Pedro, Gipuzkoa. Dedicated to preserving and showcasing the Basque Country’s rich maritime heritage, the museum specializes in traditional shipbuilding techniques and the history of Basque seafaring.
The museum was founded in 2014 and is centered around the construction of a full-scale replica of the San Juan, a 16th-century Basque whaling ship that sank off the coast of Canada. This ambitious project is based on historical records and archaeological findings, demonstrating the Basque people’s advanced shipbuilding skills during the Age of Exploration.
Visitors can witness the shipbuilding process in real time, explore exhibits detailing Basque maritime history, and learn about the region’s vital role in transatlantic trade and exploration.
Situated in a restored shipyard overlooking the Bay of Biscay, Albaola Museum offers an immersive and educational experience, making it a key destination for those interested in maritime history and Basque cultural traditions.
