Gorliz and Plentzia beaches

Located on the northeastern coast of Biscay, Gorliz and Plentzia form one of the most attractive seaside areas in the Basque Country. The two beaches lie side by side along a sheltered bay, creating a wide stretch of fine golden sand that extends for more than a kilometre. Their calm waters, protected by the shape of the bay and a natural sandbar, make them particularly suitable for swimming, paddleboarding, and family recreation.

Gorliz Beach, situated to the east, is known for its open, spacious layout and excellent facilities. It offers a well-maintained promenade lined with a beach bar, ice cream shop, picnic areas, as well as showers, changing rooms, and lifeguard services during the summer season. Behind the beach lies a large dune system and a pine forest park, ideal for walking or cycling. From the end of the promenade, visitors can access a scenic coastal path leading to the Gorliz Lighthouse, perched on the cliffs of Cabo Villano. The route provides panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea and the rugged Basque coastline.

Plentzia Beach, to the west, is just a few meters away from the port of Plentzia, which means it’s very close to many bars and restaurants. The gentle gradient of the sand and the shallow waters make it an ideal area for children and for water sports such as kayaking and sailing.

Both beaches are easily accessible by public transport from Bilbao, with the metro line reaching the centre of Plentzia. The combination of natural beauty, urban comfort, and recreational options makes Gorliz and Plentzia a reference point for coastal tourism in Biscay. Visitors can enjoy a balance between seaside relaxation, active leisure, and the authentic atmosphere of small Basque towns that have retained their maritime character.
