Itxina mountain range

The Itxina Mountain Range is a striking limestone massif located within the Gorbea Natural Park. Renowned for its rugged beauty and ecological richness, Itxina is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventurers, offering scenic hiking trails and panoramic views.

Geologically formed during the Mesozoic era, the massif is characterized by dramatic cliffs, deep sinkholes, caves, and unique karst formations. Among its notable features are the Atxulo stone arch and the Supelegor cave, steeped in Basque mythology as a legendary dwelling of spirits and mythological beings like Mari, the Basque goddess.

Itxina also holds historical and cultural significance, as it has been used by shepherds and hunters for centuries. Archaeological evidence, including tools and artifacts, indicates human activity in the area dating back to prehistoric times.

Trekking information

The most interesting route to explore Itxina is a circular one, starting and ending at the Pagomakurre parking area. The first section is short but steep, leading us to the Atxulaur Eye. Once we pass through the Eye, we enter the interior of the karstic massif of Itxina, where we’ll make our first stop at the Superlegor cave. After visiting the cave, we’ll cross the massif until we reach Kargaleku and the meadows of Arraba. From there, we return along a wide and easy track back to Pagomakurre.
