Truffle Museum of Navarre

Truffle Museum Navarra is one of the most original gastronomic museums in Navarre and a perfect place to discover the fascinating world of black truffles. Located in the small village of Metauten, near Estella-Lizarra, the museum introduces visitors to the history, cultivation, culture, and culinary importance of one of the most prized ingredients in European gastronomy.

Navarre has become one of Spain’s important truffle-producing regions thanks to its climate, forests, and limestone-rich soils, which provide ideal conditions for the growth of the famous black truffle (Tuber melanosporum). Often called the “black diamond” of the kitchen, truffles have been valued for centuries because of their intense aroma and unique flavor.

The museum explains how truffles grow underground in symbiosis with the roots of certain trees such as holm oaks and hazelnuts. Through audiovisual displays, interactive exhibits, and educational panels, visitors can learn about the difficult process of cultivating and harvesting truffles, as well as the training of truffle dogs used to locate them beneath the soil.

One of the most interesting parts of the visit is discovering how truffles became associated with luxury cuisine and fine dining across Europe. The museum also explores traditional truffle hunting methods and the growing importance of sustainable truffle farming in rural areas of Navarre.

Depending on the season, some visits may include truffle tastings, cooking workshops, or demonstrations with trained dogs. Winter is generally considered the best time to experience truffle-related activities, since this is the main harvesting season.
