Alarde de San Marcial in Irun

When & Where: In the city center of Irun every June 30th

Alarde de San Marcial de Irun, or Irungo Alardea, is one of the most important and emotional traditional festivals in the Basque Country. Held every year on June 30th in the border town of Irun, the celebration combines history, military tradition, music, religion, and strong local identity.

The origins of the Alarde date back to the Battle of San Marcial in 1522, when local militias from Irun defeated French troops attempting to invade the region. The battle took place within the wider historical context of the Castilian conquest of Navarre in 1512 and the later attempts by the Navarrese monarchs, to regain control of the kingdom. After the victory, the people of Irun made a vow to honor Saint Martial every year in gratitude for the protection of the town. Over time, this religious promise evolved into the modern Alarde, a large military-style parade that commemorates both the historical battle and the town’s collective memory.

During the festival, hundreds of participants dressed in traditional military uniforms parade through the streets accompanied by drums, fifes, brass bands, and marching music. The different companies (compañías) represent the historic neighborhoods and social groups of Irun, each with its own colors, traditions, and atmosphere. One of the most anticipated moments is the parade to the Hermitage of San Marcial on the nearby mountain overlooking the town.

The Alarde is not only a historical reenactment but also a deeply emotional celebration for many local families, who participate generation after generation. The atmosphere throughout Irun is especially vibrant from early morning until late at night, with packed streets, music, food, and celebrations across the town.

In recent decades, the festival has also become known for debates surrounding gender participation and tradition, reflecting wider social discussions within Basque society. Today, both the traditional Alarde and the mixed-gender Alarde parade take place in Irun.

Many drum parades are celebrated throughout Gipuzkoa at different times of the year. The most famous is the Donostiako Tamborrada in Donostia-San Sebastián, followed by the Alarde of Hondarribia, the San Marcial celebrations in Irun and Azpeitiako tamborrada. Each celebration has its own distinct local identity, historical background, musical traditions, and ceremonial customs.
