Museo de la Historia de Balmaseda or Balmasedako Historiaren Museoa offers visitors an excellent introduction to the rich history of one of the oldest and most historically important towns in the Basque Country. Located in the medieval center of Balmaseda, the museum explores the town’s development from its foundation in the 12th century to its role as an important commercial and industrial center in Bizkaia.
Founded in 1199, Balmaseda was the first town established in Bizkaia and quickly became a key crossroads between Castile and the Cantabrian coast. Its strategic position along trade routes allowed merchants transporting wool, iron, wine, and other products to pass through the town for centuries, helping Balmaseda grow into an important economic and cultural hub.
The museum presents this history through archaeological remains, historical documents, models, photographs, traditional objects, and audiovisual displays. Visitors can learn about medieval trade, the importance of local markets, religious traditions, and the transformation of the town during the industrial era.
One of the most interesting sections focuses on Balmaseda’s famous Holy Week celebrations, among the most important in northern Spain. The museum explains how these religious processions became a central part of the town’s identity and cultural heritage.
The exhibitions also highlight the importance of ironworking, manufacturing, and river transport in the economic development of the region. Through maps and historical materials, visitors can better understand how Balmaseda connected inland Castile with the ports of the Cantabrian coast.
The museum is located close to some of Balmaseda’s most famous landmarks, including the medieval Old Bridge, the Church of San Severino, and the historic streets along the Cadagua River. Most visits take around one hour and can easily be combined with a walk through the old town.
