In the heart of Bilbao, Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao represents one of the most successful examples of urban regeneration in Bilbao. Originally built between 1905 and 1909 as the city’s municipal wine warehouse, the former Alhóndiga was designed by Basque architect Ricardo Bastida during Bilbao’s industrial expansion.
After decades of abandonment, the building was reimagined as a civic and cultural center through a major renovation led by French designer Philippe Starck. Rather than demolishing the historic structure, the project preserved its monumental exterior while creating a radically contemporary interior.
Architecture and Interior Design
The defining feature of Azkuna Zentroa is its vast atrium supported by 43 uniquely designed columns inspired by different cultures, architectural traditions, and historical styles. Inside, three brick-clad volumes appear suspended within the original shell of the warehouse, creating a striking contrast between industrial heritage and modern design.
Visitors often notice the transparent-bottom swimming pool suspended above the atrium, one of the building’s most photographed details.
What Visitors Can Expect
Today, Azkuna Zentroa functions as a public space for Bilbao residents and travelers alike. The complex includes exhibition halls, cinemas, a library, cafés, restaurants such as Yandiola, fitness facilities, and cultural venues hosting literary festivals, concerts, and contemporary art events throughout the year.
Located near Plaza Indautxu, it is easily reached on foot from central Bilbao and pairs well with visits to the nearby Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Ensanche district.
