Machine Tool Museum

Makina Herramienta Museoa or Museo de Maquina Herramienta, located in Elgoibar, preserves the industrial history that helped shape the modern Basque Country. Dedicated to machine tools and manufacturing technology, the museum highlights the region’s transformation into one of southern Europe’s most important industrial centers during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Creation of the Museum

The idea for the museum emerged in 1982, when rapid advances in electronics and computing began replacing traditional industrial machinery. Engineers, manufacturers, and historians recognized that many pioneering machine tools developed across the Basque industrial sector would soon disappear. What had once powered local factories risked becoming forgotten history.

Between 1994 and 1998, a technical commission worked to recover and preserve representative examples of machine tools produced by early Basque manufacturers. Their objective was not simply technical conservation, but the protection of an industrial heritage considered essential to the economic and social identity of the region.

The museum officially opened on December 16, 1998, becoming one of the few specialized museums of its kind in Spain.

What Visitors Can Expect

Unlike traditional art museums, Makina Herramienta Museoa offers a practical understanding of how industrial innovation shaped daily life, employment, and technological development in the Basque Country. Demonstrations of functioning machinery are often among the highlights of a visit. Visitors can explore historic lathes, milling machines, presses, and mechanical systems that illustrate the evolution of precision engineering and industrial production.

The museum is particularly interesting for travelers interested in engineering, industrial archaeology, and Basque economic history. Elgoibar is easily accessible from Bilbao, San Sebastián, and the Deba Valley. Regular admission is approximately 5€.
