Castle of Mauléon

Mauleko gaztelua or Château-fort de Mauléon is one of the most important medieval fortresses in the French Basque Country. Located in the province of Soule (Zuberoa), the castle dominates the town of Mauléon-Licharre from a rocky hilltop overlooking the Saison Valley. Its strategic position made it a key defensive stronghold for centuries, particularly during conflicts between the Kingdom of Navarre, the English crown, and the Kingdom of France.

The origins of the castle date back to the twelfth century, although much of the current structure reflects later medieval military architecture. During the Middle Ages, Soule occupied a frontier position between major regional powers, and Mauléon became heavily fortified to control trade routes and mountain access through the western Pyrenees. The fortress changed hands several times during the Hundred Years’ War, when English and French forces competed for control of southwestern France.

Architecture and Historical Importance

The castle retains many defensive features typical of medieval frontier fortresses, including thick stone walls, elevated ramparts, towers, and commanding panoramic viewpoints over the surrounding valley. Although partially ruined, the structure still conveys the military importance of Mauléon within the historical Basque territories.

Unlike more heavily restored castles, the Castle of Mauléon preserves an austere and authentic appearance closely connected to its defensive role. The site also reflects the unique cultural identity of Soule, the smallest and most mountainous province of the Basque Country, known for its strong traditions, pastoral culture, and Basque-language heritage.

Practical Information for Visitors

Visitors can walk through parts of the fortress ruins and enjoy panoramic views over Mauléon and the surrounding Pyrenean foothills. The castle is accessible on foot from the town center through a short uphill walk.

During spring and summer months, the castle opens daily from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Mauléon-Licharre is located around two hours from Bilbao and approximately 90 minutes from San Sebastián, making it a rewarding destination for travelers exploring the inland French Basque Country.
