Castle of Gramont in Bidache

Castle of Bidache, known in Basque as Bidaxuneko Gaztelua, is one of the most historically significant castles in the French Basque Country. Located in the village of Bidache (Bidaxune), between Bayonne and the inland Basque provinces, the castle dominates the surrounding countryside from a strategic hilltop position overlooking the Bidouze Valley.

The origins of the fortress date back to the Middle Ages, at least 1329, when Bidache became closely linked to the powerful Gramont or Agramont family, one of the most influential noble dynasties in the western Pyrenees. The Agramonts played a major political and military role in the Kingdom of Navarre and later in the French court. During periods of instability between Navarre, France, and Castile, the family used Bidache as an important defensive and administrative center.

Only three large round towers on the northwest and southern sides still belong to the original medieval castle. The fortress was largely destroyed in 1523 by the troops of Charles I of Spain in retaliation for the Agramont family’s support of the Kings of Navarre. Shortly afterward, the castle was rebuilt in Renaissance style while still preserving important references to its medieval defensive architecture.

The Agramont Family and the Principality of Bidache

The castle became the symbolic heart of the small Principality of Bidache, a semi-independent territory controlled by the Gramont family for centuries. Although officially connected to the Kingdom of France, the lords of Bidache exercised unusual autonomy and maintained significant local power.

During the Renaissance and early modern period, the medieval fortress was transformed into a more elegant residence while retaining important defensive features. However, a devastating fire in the eighteenth century caused severe damage to the complex, leaving much of the castle in ruins.

Today, visitors can still admire large sections of walls, towers, and remnants of the former noble residence. The ruins preserve a strong medieval atmosphere and remain one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in inland Labourd.

Practical Information for Visitors

The Castle of Bidache can be visited from the outside, and the surrounding grounds offer excellent views over the village and nearby valleys. Bidache is located approximately 40 minutes from Bayonne and makes an interesting stop when exploring the inland French Basque Country and Lower Navarre.

The village itself also contains historic houses, a traditional Basque atmosphere, and access to nearby rural walking routes.
