Château d’Andurain de Maytie is one of the most remarkable historic residences in Soule (Zuberoa), the smallest and most mountainous province of the French Basque Country. Located near Mauléon-Licharre, the château is an outstanding example of the architecture of southwestern France from the early 17th century and remains inhabited by descendants of the Maytie family.
The castle was originally built by Arnaud de Maytie, Catholic Bishop of Oloron between 1599 and 1623. The Maytie lineage played an important role in the religious and political history of the region, notably providing three bishops to the Diocese of Oloron. Unlike many castles in the Basque Country that were primarily defensive fortresses, Château d’Andurain de Maytie reflects the transformation of noble residences during the early modern period, when comfort, prestige, and refined interior decoration became increasingly important.
Interior Architecture and Historic Collections
One of the château’s most remarkable features is the richness of its interior decoration. Visitors are often surprised by the impressive sculpted Baroque fireplaces, elegant period furniture dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and the extraordinary wooden roof structure resembling an inverted ship’s hull.
The residence also preserves an important historical library containing rare folios and antique books that illustrate the intellectual and cultural environment of the Basque nobility during the Ancien Régime. These collections provide valuable insight into the social history of Soule and the wider Basque Country.
