Castle of Amaiur is one of the most historically significant castle ruins in Navarre. Located above the village of Amaiur in the Baztan valley, the fortress is remembered not only for its medieval origins but also for its symbolic role in the final resistance of the independent Kingdom of Navarre during the early 16th century.
Construction and Medieval History
The castle was originally constructed during the 12th century as part of the defensive network protecting northern Navarre and the Pyrenean access routes between the Iberian Peninsula and France. Its strategic hilltop location allowed control over movement through the Baztan valley, an important corridor for trade, military campaigns, and communication.
Like many castles in Navarre, Amaiur combined military, administrative, and territorial functions. The fortress formed part of a wider system of castles and fortified settlements distributed throughout the kingdom, reinforcing royal authority in frontier areas.
The Importance of 1521–1522
The Castle of Amaiur became especially important after the Castilian conquest of Navarre in 1512. In 1521, Navarrese loyalists supported by French forces attempted to reconquer the kingdom and restore Navarrese independence. Although much of the campaign failed, Amaiur became one of the final strongholds resisting Castilian control.
In 1522, a small group of defenders held the castle against a much larger besieging force. The fall of Amaiur is often considered one of the final episodes in the military resistance of the independent Kingdom of Navarre. Because of this historical significance, the castle occupies an important place in Navarrese historical memory and identity.
Destruction and Current Situation
Following its capture, the fortress was largely destroyed to prevent future rebellions. Today, only ruins remain, though archaeological work and restoration projects have helped preserve parts of the site and improve public access.
Visitors can still identify sections of walls, foundations, and defensive structures while enjoying panoramic views over the Baztan valley and surrounding mountains.

The castle ruins are reached via a short uphill walk from the village of Amaiur. Informational panels explain the historical importance of the site and the events of 1522.
