Agurtza ship museum

The Barco Museo Agurtza, located in the fishing port of Santurtzi, is a museum dedicated to preserving the region’s maritime heritage, specifically its fishing traditions. This wooden fishing vessel, one of the last of its kind in the Basque Country, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the life and work of traditional fishermen.

Built in 1968 in the Murelaga shipyards of Lekeitio, the Agurtza, designed for surface-sea fishing, particularly cod and hake. It served as a working vessel for decades, reflecting the traditional fishing practices that have long been integral to the Basque economy and culture. Recognizing its historical significance, the ship was restored and converted into a museum, officially opening to the public in 2005.

Visitors to the Barco Museo Agurtza can explore the ship’s various sections, each providing insight into the life of a fisherman: the deck area, the engine room, the crew quartes and, finally, the cargo hold, where the catch was stored and preserved during long trips at sea.
