The Basque Festivies of Ordizia, also known as Euskal Jaiak, are annual celebrations held over several days in September in the town of Ordizia, located in the province of Gipuzkoa. Their origins date back to 1614, when an Extraordinary Fair was established with the authorization of King Philip III.

Although the exact dates vary each year, the festivities are always celebrated during the first half of September, with the main day taking place on the Wednesday closest to September 9, day of the Virgin.

The festivities revolve around an agricultural and livestock market, which stands out for the participation of local producers. Additionally, various activities related to Basque culture and traditional sports take place. Basque pelota matches between professionals are held on the Beti-Alai fronton court and Joxe Migel Barandiaran Square holds the aizkolaritza wood-chopping championship.

The most emblematic event is the Ordizia Idiazabal Cheese Competition, wich tooks place on the Wednesday closest to September 9. Once the winning cheese has been named, half of the winning cheese is auctioned for charitable purposes, sometimes reaching bids exceeding 10.000 euros.

These festivities offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in Basque traditions, providing an authentic experience that combines history, gastronomy, and culture in a festive atmosphere.
