Near Biarritz and Bayonne, in the French Basque Country, Anglet offers one of the most extensive and dynamic stretches of coastline in the region. Its 11 beaches extend over nearly 4.5 kilometres of open Atlantic shore, forming a continuous sequence of wide sandy areas framed by dunes and promenades. Each beach has its own character, but all share a common atmosphere defined by strong ocean swells, well-maintained facilities, and a close connection between sport and coastal life.
Among them, the Plage des Cavaliers stands out as one of the most famous. Situated in the northern section of the coastline, it is widely recognised as a top surfing destination thanks to its powerful and consistent waves. The beach regularly hosts national and international surfing competitions and attracts both professionals and experienced amateurs throughout the year. Despite its sporting reputation, it also offers lifeguard supervision, parking, and basic amenities, making it accessible to general visitors during the summer months.
Further south, beaches such as Les Sables d’Or, La Madrague, and La Barre provide more sheltered areas suitable for swimming, families, and leisure activities. Wooden walkways, cycle paths, and beach bars connect the entire coastal area, forming a pleasant environment for walking, jogging, or watching the sunset. Behind the dunes, the Pignada and Chiberta forests create a natural transition between the ocean and the town.
Anglet’s beaches are also known for their strong tides and changing conditions, which shape the coastline throughout the year. Visitors are advised to observe safety flags and local regulations, especially when swimming outside the summer season. Access is convenient by car, bicycle, or public transport from nearby Biarritz and Bayonne.
