Castle of Marcilla is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval castles in Navarre. Located in the Ribera region of southern Navarre, the fortress reflects the strategic importance of the area during the Middle Ages, when the Kingdom of Navarre defended its southern frontier through a dense network of castles, towers, and fortified towns.
Unlike many Navarrese castles that survive only as ruins, Marcilla retains much of its original structure, making it one of the most significant examples of medieval military architecture in the region.

The castle was built during the 15th century, largely under the authority of Mosén Pierres de Peralta, one of the most influential noble figures in late medieval Navarre. Constructed primarily in brick around an earlier defensive structure, the fortress combined military and residential functions, reflecting the political instability of the final centuries of the independent Kingdom of Navarre.
Marcilla occupied a strategic position near the Aragón River and communication routes linking central Navarre with Aragón and Castile. During periods of internal conflict and dynastic disputes, the castle became an important centre of noble power.
Nearby fortifications such as castle of Caparroso, Castillo de Santacara and the fortified settlement of Rada formed part of the broader defensive landscape protecting southern Navarre. Together, these castles controlled river valleys, roads, and agricultural territories.
Destruction, Preservation and Current Situation
After the Castilian conquest of Navarre in 1512, many castles across the kingdom were partially demolished under the orders of Cardinal Cisneros to prevent future rebellions. According to local tradition, the Castle of Marcilla avoided destruction thanks to the intervention of Ana de Velasco, who reportedly persuaded the authorities not to dismantle the fortress.
As a result, Marcilla survives in far better condition than many other castles in Navarre. Today, visitors can still see defensive towers, interior courtyards, walls, and architectural elements that illustrate the transition from medieval fortress to noble residence.

The castle is located within the town of Marcilla and can be visited through guided tours and cultural activities organised throughout the year. Because the building has undergone restoration work, it is considerably easier to explore than many ruined castles in Navarre.
