The Jantziaren Zentroa (Centre for Basque Costume), located in Errenteria, Gipuzkoa, is a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich textile and clothing heritage of the Basque Country. Established in 2003, the center aims to document, research, and disseminate knowledge about traditional Basque clothing and its evolution over time. It is housed in a restored 17th-century building, itself a testament to the region’s historical architecture.
The Jantziaren Zentroa’s collection encompasses a wide variety of garments, accessories, and textile artifacts, offering a comprehensive overview of Basque clothing traditions. The collection includes examples of traditional clothing worn in different regions of the Basque Country, reflecting the diverse cultural expressions within the territory. Visitors can observe variations in styles, fabrics, and embellishments that distinguish regional dress.
Among the displayed pieces are examples of everyday wear, festive attire, and clothing associated with specific occupations or social roles. These include garments such as gerrikoak (sashes), alkandorak (shirts), gonak (skirts), and txapelas (berets), all integral parts of traditional Basque dress. The center also showcases examples of traditional footwear, jewelry, and other accessories that complement the garments. At the end of the visit, there are several headdresses and six dresses from the Eisa fashion house by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga from the 50s-60s.
Beyond simply displaying clothing, the Jantziaren Zentroa delves into the social and cultural contexts surrounding these garments. Exhibits explore the materials used in their creation, the techniques employed in their production, and the symbolic meanings associated with different styles and colors.
