Donostiako Aste Nagusia

When & Where: 9 days starting on the 9th of August.

The Donostiako Aste Nagusia (San Sebastián’s Great Week) is the most important summer festival of San Sebastián (Donostia) and one of the major cultural events in the Basque Country. Celebrated every August, the festivities last nine days, filling the city with music, fireworks, parades, and traditional Basque activities.

The celebration begins on August 9 at 7:00 p.m. with the launch of the cannon, a symbolic act that marks the official opening in the Alderdi Eder Gardens, next to the iconic La Concha Bay. From that moment, the city’s atmosphere transforms: the streets, beaches, and squares host a wide range of activities for all audiences, from concerts and open-air theatre to sporting competitions and children’s workshops.

One of the main highlights of Donostiako Aste Nagusia is the International Fireworks Competition, held every evening over La Concha Bay. Pyrotechnic companies from different countries participate, offering spectacular displays that illuminate the bay and attract large crowds to the seafront promenade. This competition, first held in 1964, has become a defining symbol of the festival and one of the most renowned fireworks events in Europe.

Music also plays a central role, with free concerts taking place on several stages across the city. Performances range from traditional Basque music and dance to jazz, pop, and rock, reflecting San Sebastián’s rich cultural diversity. Additionally, Basque rural sports (herri kirolak), rowing competitions, and processions celebrating local traditions highlight the connection between the festivities and the region’s identity.

The festival concludes with the final fireworks display and the closing ceremony, which marks the end of a week that combines joy, community, and culture.
