Izki Natural Park

Situated in the eastern part of Álava, between the mountains of Izki and Codes, Izki Natural Park covers over 9,000 hectares of pristine natural landscapes. The park’s combination of dense forests, river valleys, and rocky cliffs supports an exceptional diversity of species and ecosystems.

Izki is best known for its extensive forests of Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica), which form one of the most important and continuous stands of this species in the Iberian Peninsula. These deciduous woodlands create a unique environment that shelters a wide range of forest-dwelling birds and mammals. The natural structure of the forest — with old trees, dead wood, and a rich undergrowth — provides ideal nesting and feeding habitats for many species, contributing to the park’s high ecological value.

Among its most emblematic species is the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius). Izki hosts one of the most significant populations of this bird in northern Spain, making it an essential site for its conservation. Visitors can also observe other woodpeckers, such as the great spotted, green, and black woodpeckers, whose drumming and calls are a characteristic sound of the park’s forests.

The cliffs and open landscapes of Izki are home to larger birds of prey. The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) can frequently be seen soaring above the valleys, taking advantage of the thermal currents.

With its network of well-marked trails and viewpoints, Izki Natural Park offers visitors the opportunity to explore its rich natural heritage in a peaceful and respectful way.
