Karpin Fauna is one of the most unique wildlife parks in the Basque Country. Located in the green valley of Karrantza, in western Bizkaia, the park combines animal rescue, environmental education, and nature conservation in a large rural setting surrounded by forests and mountains.
Unlike a traditional zoo, Karpin Fauna focuses mainly on the recovery and care of injured, abandoned, or illegally kept animals that cannot return to the wild. Many of the animals living in the park were rescued by environmental authorities or conservation organizations. The goal of the center is not only to care for these animals but also to raise awareness about biodiversity, habitat destruction, and the illegal wildlife trade.
The park is divided into several themed areas connected by walking paths through the countryside. Visitors can see a wide variety of species, including bears, lynxes, wolves, deer, birds of prey, reptiles, and exotic animals from different parts of the world. Informational panels throughout the park explain the origin of the animals and the environmental challenges affecting each species.
One of the most popular sections for families is the dinosaur area, where life-sized prehistoric models are integrated into the landscape, making the visit especially entertaining for children. The large outdoor spaces and natural surroundings give the park a very different atmosphere from urban animal parks.
Karpin Fauna is especially recommended for families traveling with children. The visit usually takes several hours, as the park covers a large area with some uphill sections, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
