Ascent of Hernio Mountain from Iturriotz

Mount Hernio is one of the most iconic and beloved mountains in Gipuzkoa. Rising to 1.078 meters, Hernio has long been considered one of the symbolic mountains of the Basque Country thanks to its panoramic views and cultural significance. The ascent from Iturriotz is the most popular and accessible route to the summit, making it suitable for most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.

The route begins near Iturriotz (580m), a former country inn, located in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by green hills and grazing livestock, where according to historic accounts Ignatius of Loyola stayed overnight on his journey home from Paris in April 1535.

A trail goes up and gains height along the stream Zelatun until the pass of the same name is reached (841 m). At the Zelatun pass, a cluster of huts are found, and a beaten trail up must be taken on the left that cuts across the side of Hernio. Zelatun is especially lively during local festivals and autumn weekends, when hikers, families, and mountaineers gather around the shepherd huts and rural taverns.

The final section to the summit becomes steeper and rockier, but the effort is rewarded with spectacular views over Gipuzkoa, the Cantabrian coast, and on clear days even the Pyrenees. One of the most striking features of the summit is the large collection of iron crosses — more than 400 in total — hanging around the summit cross and nearby structures. According to local tradition, many visitors pass through the rings attached to the crosses believing they may bring protection, health, or good luck.

Hernio has long held an important place in Basque mountain culture and popular traditions. Every September, thousands of people participate in the traditional Hernio pilgrimage and mountain festival, creating one of the most important mountain gatherings in the Basque Country.
