Pasaia

Pasaia, situated on the eastern coast of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, is a charming town with a rich maritime history and stunning natural surroundings. Nestled around a sheltered bay, it consists of four districts: Pasai Donibane (San Juan), Pasai San Pedro, Antxo, and Trintxerpe, each offering unique character and charm.

Historically, Pasaia has been a vital port since medieval times, serving as a hub for fishing, shipbuilding, and trade. Its strategic location made it a focal point for maritime activity, a legacy that remains evident today. The town is home to several traditional fishing boats and is renowned for its shipbuilding heritage.

Pasai Donibane is the most picturesque district, with its narrow cobbled streets, colorful facades, and waterfront promenade. It exudes a timeless atmosphere, highlighted by landmarks such as the Church of San Juan Bautista and Victor Hugo’s House, where the famous French writer stayed during his visit in 1843. The house now functions as a museum dedicated to his work and the town’s history.

Pasai San Pedro, directly across the bay, offers a vibrant harbor scene. The birthplace of famous admiral Casa Natal de Blas de Lezo is located here. Visitors can take a short boat ride between the two districts, enjoying breathtaking views of the bay and its steep green cliffs. This area is also the starting point for the scenic hike to the Faro de la Plata lighthouse, a route offering panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea.

The Albaola Sea Factory of the Basques, located in Pasai San Pedro, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. This innovative museum showcases traditional shipbuilding techniques and includes the reconstruction of a 16th-century whaling ship, the San Juan.

Pasaia’s annual maritime festival, the Pasaia Itsas Festibala, celebrates its seafaring heritage, attracting historic ships and enthusiasts from across Europe. Combined with its natural beauty and cultural significance, Pasaia is an essential stop for anyone exploring the Basque Country.
