Roman settlement of Santa Criz

The Roman ruins of Santa Criz de Eslava, located near the town of Eslava in Navarre, are among the most important archaeological sites in the region. This ancient settlement, believed to have been established between the 1st century BCE and the 4th century CE, offers a comprehensive look into Roman urban and rural life.

The site is notable for its well-preserved remains, which include residential, public, and religious structures. One of the most significant features is the forum, a central plaza that served as the civic and social hub of the settlement. Surrounding the forum are the remains of public buildings and temples, indicating the city’s administrative and religious functions.

Visitors can explore sections of the city walls, gateways, and streets organized in the characteristic Roman grid pattern. The remains of luxurious domus, or Roman houses, feature mosaic floors, courtyards, and intricate architectural details, showcasing the wealth of some of the settlement’s inhabitants. Evidence of a bath complex reflects the Roman emphasis on hygiene and social interaction.

One of the unique aspects of Santa Criz de Eslava is its strategic location on a hilltop, providing natural defense and commanding views of the surrounding landscape. This position likely contributed to its prominence as a settlement and trade hub during the Roman era.

To the south of the settlement, separated from the urban center, we can find a well preserved Roman necropolis, which occupies about 2000 m2.

The site is complemented by informative panels and guided tours, making it accessible and engaging for visitors.
