Seven Streets of Bilbao

The Siete Calles (Seven Streets), or Zazpi Kaleak in Basque, form the original medieval core of Bilbao, Bizkaia. This historic district, located on the right bank of the Nervi贸n River, marks the foundation of the city and retains a unique character distinct from the later expansions of Bilbao.

The town of Bilbao was officially founded in 1300 by Diego L贸pez V de Haro, Lord of Bizkaia. The initial settlement consisted of three parallel streets: Somera, Artecalle, and Tender铆a. Over time, four more streets were added: Barrenkale, Barrenkale Barrena, Goienkale, and Goienkale Barrena, completing the seven streets that define the historic district.

The Siete Calles served as the commercial and social heart of Bilbao for centuries. Its narrow, winding streets, lined with historic buildings, reflect its medieval origins. The area was historically home to merchants, artisans, and fishermen, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.

Key features and attractions within the Siete Calles include:

  • Plaza Nueva: This neoclassical square, built in the 19th century, is a central gathering place in the heart of the Siete Calles. It hosts various events and markets throughout the year.
  • Church of San Ant贸n: This Gothic church, located near the riverbank, is one of the oldest buildings in Bilbao. Its history is closely linked to the development of the city.
  • Mercado de la Ribera: Located on the edge of the Siete Calles, this covered market is one of the largest in Europe, offering a wide variety of fresh produce, seafood, and local products.
  • Narrow Streets and Historic Buildings: The characteristic narrow streets and historic buildings of the Siete Calles provide a tangible link to Bilbao’s medieval past. Many of these buildings have been restored and now house shops, restaurants, and bars.

Today, the Siete Calles remain a vibrant and popular area, attracting both locals and tourists with its historical charm, lively atmosphere, and diverse offerings. It’s a must-see destination for anyone visiting Bilbao, offering a glimpse into the city’s origins and rich history.
