Torre-Palacio de los Condes de Orgaz, or Orgaztarren Dorrea in euskera, is one of the most remarkable examples of medieval civil architecture in Álava and an important landmark in the western Basque Country. Located in Fontecha, within the municipality of Lantarón, the tower occupied a strategic position near historic communication routes linking the Ebro Valley, Burgos, and the Basque territories.
The Tower-Palace of the Counts of Orgaz is the most characteristic structure within the historic complex. It was built at the end of the 14th century or beginning of the 15th century using finely worked sandstone ashlar masonry, reflecting both defensive and noble residential functions. Like many Basque tower houses, the building originally formed part of a fortified network linked to local noble families and territorial disputes that shaped medieval Álava.
From Fortress to Noble Residence
The structure displays many features typical of Basque fortified towers, including thick walls, defensive openings, and a compact vertical design intended for protection during periods of instability. However, by the late 15th or early 16th century, the complex gradually lost its military role and evolved into a more comfortable residential palace.
This transition from fortress to noble residence reflects broader political and social changes in the Basque Country, where internal conflicts between noble lineages slowly diminished and aristocratic residences became symbols of prestige rather than military power.
Today, the tower remains one of the best-preserved examples of the medieval tower-palace tradition in Álava and an important testimony to the architectural heritage of the Añana region.
Guided Visits and Practical Information
The Torre de Orgaz can be visited through guided tours organized during April, May, June, July, September, and October. The itinerary generally includes a morning bus departure from Vitoria-Gasteiz, a guided visit to the Santa Catalina Botanical Garden, and a theatrical guided tour of the Tower-Palace of the Counts of Orgaz in Fontecha. The experience also includes lunch at a restaurant in the Añana region before returning to Vitoria-Gasteiz later in the day.
The surrounding area offers visitors additional opportunities to explore castles, medieval villages, vineyards, and landscapes near the Ebro corridor in western Álava. For example, the Tower of Condestable is located very close.
